Japanese verb conjugation chart (free PDF)

Japanese verbs fall into three groups, and each group changes its ending in a fixed way: 書く becomes 書きます, 書かない, 書いて and 書いた. This chart conjugates 14 everyday verbs into the polite ます forms, the plain ない form and the て and た forms, with the て-form rules and the い- and な-adjective forms. For the JFT-Basic, the polite forms and the て-form (〜てください, 〜ています) come up most.

How to use it

How to use the conjugation chart for the JFT-Basic

  1. Find the verb's group first

Group 2 verbs end in -iru or -eru and just drop る. Group 1 changes its last sound. Only する and 来る are irregular.

  2. Master the て-form

It builds requests, permission and the present continuous. Learn the rules table until you can say the て-form of any verb in a second.

  3. Hide the forms and recite

Use the switch above the sheet to hide the readings, then read each row aloud from left to right.

  4. Check with real blanks

The grammar quiz has verb-form questions with the same wrong answers learners pick: 待ちて, 書きて.
