Indonesia: the biggest JFT-Basic country by far
Indonesia is in a league of its own. In the August–September 2026 period, the Japan Foundation counted 22,363 test-takers in Indonesia, out of 50,145 worldwide. That is 45% of everyone who took the test. 48.7% of Indonesian test-takers reached A2.2 (200 or more), above the world average of 41.3%.
Because the market is so big, Indonesia has three rules found nowhere else: the e-KTP as the only ID, a nationals-only policy, and a minimum age of 18.
Indonesian results by test period
| Test period (2026) | Test-takers | Result |
|---|---|---|
| April–May | 17,352 | 68.1% reached A2 |
| June–July | 15,341 | 66.6% reached A2 |
| August–September | 22,363 | 17.2% A1 · 24.6% A2.1 · 48.7% A2.2 |
The August–September period had about 7,000 more test-takers than June–July, and a lower share at the top level. The Japan Foundation does not explain the change. From August 2026 it also reports A1 and A2.1, which matter for the new Employment for Skill Development programme, not for SSW.
Berapa biaya JFT-Basic di Indonesia?
The fee is IDR 550,000 on Prometric's fee page. Payment options for Indonesia:
- Visa or Mastercard (credit, debit or prepaid) with 3D Secure;
- e-wallet: Prometric warns that the name shown as the payee may not be "Prometric", and that the name can change. Don't panic if you see a payment-company name instead;
- voucher, often bought by LPK training centres for their students.
A voucher only pays the fee. You still need your own Prometric ID, made with your own email address and your own e-KTP details.
Who can take the test in Indonesia?
- Indonesian citizens only. Prometric states that only Indonesian nationals can take the test in Indonesia. A foreigner living in Jakarta has to test elsewhere.
- 18 or older on the test date. If you turn 18 during the test period, book a date on or after your birthday.
- e-KTP only. Not a passport and not a printed KTP copy. Bring the original card.
Getting your name right
This is where most Indonesian booking problems start. Prometric's instructions for Indonesia say:
- enter your name exactly as it appears on the e-KTP, including degrees (gelar such as S.Pd. or S.Kom.);
- names can be at most 39 characters;
- symbols are not allowed;
- the NIK must match the number on your Prometric ID.
If your full name with gelar is longer than 39 characters, or the gelar contains full stops, ask Prometric's customer service how to enter it before you book, and keep a screenshot of what you entered. Indonesians register with the e-KTP rather than a passport MRZ.
Where are the JFT-Basic test centres in Indonesia?
Prometric's overseas schedule (updated 15 October 2026) lists these centres:
| City | Centres |
|---|---|
| Jakarta | Pademangan, Plaza Sentral, Satrio Tower A, Satrio Tower B, Jakarta Timur |
| Bandung | Andir, Astanaanyar |
| Semarang | Banyumanik, Tembalang |
| Yogyakarta | Ngaglik, Sleman |
| Surabaya | Surabaya |
| Medan | Medan |
| Padang | Padang |
| Denpasar | Denpasar |
| Makassar | Makassar |
| Manado | Manado |
Padang appears on the current list but not among the cities in the August–September 2026 report, which suggests it is one of the newer centres. Prometric announced a new Indonesian centre on 10 September 2026. Addresses are on your Confirmation Letter; check the live schedule before booking.
When does booking open?
For the next period:
- Booking opens: 25 November 2026, about 10:00 AM Japan time. That is about 08:00 WIB (Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Padang) and 09:00 WITA (Denpasar, Makassar, Manado).
- Booking closes: 12 January 2027.
- Test dates: 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027.
Bookings close at least 3 business days before each test (four for weekend tests), counted on the Japanese calendar.
Di hari tes (on test day)
The screen shows the instructions in English, with a Your Language button for Indonesian. There are about 50 questions and one 60-minute clock for all four sections. Your score appears on screen at the end, and the official result is on Prometric My Page within 5 business days. If you score below 200, you can rebook after 45 days. See the exam day guide for check-in.
From JFT-Basic to SSW: the Indonesian procedure
Japan and Indonesia have an SSW Memorandum of Cooperation. The ISA notes it was extended by six months from 25 June 2026. The ISA describes two hiring routes, plus registration steps for you:
Route A: direct hire through IPKOL
The Japanese employer registers on IPKOL, the Ministry of Manpower's free online job system, and posts the job. You apply through IPKOL, and the signed contract is uploaded there. Indonesia prefers this route and says it helps fight brokers.Route B: through a P3MI
The employer works with a licensed Japanese job placement business that partners with a P3MI (a licensed Indonesian placement company). The job order and contract are checked by the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, free of charge, in about three days. The employer must run the interview itself; a P3MI may not pick who gets interviewed.SISKOP2MI registration
After the Certificate of Eligibility is issued, and before you apply for the visa, you register yourself online on SISKOP2MI (siskop2mi.bp2mi.go.id) and receive an ID number. The visa application needs it.Visa and E-PMI
After the visa is issued, you register it on SISKOP2MI and complete pre-departure steps, including orientation. You then receive the E-PMI migrant worker card.
Indonesians already in Japan who switch to SSW also register on SISKOP2MI and have the contract checked by the embassy. For the skills test in your field, see SSW fields.
