What makes Myanmar different
Three things set Myanmar apart from the other 13 JFT-Basic countries:
- A separate booking start. Like Nepal, Myanmar opens about six hours after the rest of the world, at about 13:30 MMT.
- A minimum age of 17. Only Indonesia (18) has a similar rule.
- Card-only payment. No voucher and no e-wallet. If you cannot pay in US dollars by card, you cannot book.
Demand is high and seats are tight. In April–May 2026 the Japan Foundation counted 4,728 test-takers in Myanmar, the third highest after Indonesia and Nepal. In August–September 2026 there were 3,071, and 42.1% of them reached A2.2 (200 or more), just above the world average of 41.3%. Myanmar candidates do well once they get a seat; getting the seat is the hard part.
Myanmar results by test period
| Test period (2026) | Test-takers | Result |
|---|---|---|
| April–May | 4,728 | 47.3% reached A2 |
| June–July | 2,444 | 48.6% reached A2 |
| August–September | 3,071 | 19.2% A1 · 27.5% A2.1 · 42.1% A2.2 |

How much is the JFT-Basic in Myanmar, and how do you pay?
The fee is USD 36. Prometric's payment page lists only one method for Myanmar: a Visa or Mastercard credit, debit or prepaid card with 3D Secure. That means:
- the card must be enabled for international online payments in US dollars;
- you need the phone linked to the card on booking day, for the one-time password;
- there is a time limit once you reach the payment page, so don't start looking for a card then.
If you are using a family member's or a friend's card, that is a payment question only. The Prometric ID must still be in your own name, matching your passport.
Where are the JFT-Basic test centres in Myanmar?
Prometric's overseas schedule (updated 15 October 2026) lists five centres:
| City | Centre name on Prometric |
|---|---|
| Yangon | Yangon MICT Building 4 |
| Yangon | Yangon MICT Building 7 |
| Yangon | Yangon Sanchaung A |
| Yangon | Yangon Sanchaung B |
| Mandalay | Mandalay |
All FY2026 implementation reports list Yangon and Mandalay as the two test cities. MICT is the Myanmar Info-Tech park; Sanchaung is a township in Yangon. Your Confirmation Letter gives the exact address. Check the current schedule before you book, because centres change.
When does booking open in Myanmar?
For the next test period, Prometric gives:
- Booking opens: 25 November 2026, at about 1:30 PM Myanmar time (about 4:00 PM Japan time).
- Booking closes: 12 January 2027.
- Test dates: 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027.
Each booking must be made at least 3 business days before the test (four for weekend and Japanese holiday tests).
The 59-day rule is for skills tests, not the JFT-Basic
On 2 October 2026 Prometric changed the booking rules in Myanmar for six SSW skills tests, including the Nursing Care, Agriculture, Food and Beverage Manufacturing, Construction and Accommodation tests. From the December 2026 tests, those open 59 days before each test date, behind a virtual waiting room, with about 20 minutes to finish once you are let through. The JFT-Basic is not in that list. If you are a care candidate, you will deal with both systems.
What ID and age rules apply?
- Passport only, original and valid. No national registration card (NRC), no copies and no phone photos.
- Name, passport number and date of birth must match your Prometric ID exactly.
- You must be at least 17 on the test date. If you turn 17 in the middle of a test period, book a date after your birthday.
- Bring the Confirmation Letter. See the exam day guide.
The test, with Myanmar-language help
On screen, instructions are in English with a Your Language button for Myanmar (Burmese). The Japanese itself is not translated. There are about 50 questions in 60 minutes, and listening clips play at most 2 times. You see your score at the end; the official result arrives on My Page within 5 business days. Below 200, you can rebook after 45 days: use the retake calculator to plan around the next booking window.
From JFT-Basic to SSW: Myanmar's procedure
Japan and Myanmar have an SSW Memorandum of Cooperation, renewed for five years from 1 April 2024. The Immigration Services Agency summarises the Myanmar side:
Licensed sending agency
A Japanese employer hiring from Myanmar must recruit through a sending agency licensed by the Myanmar government. The agency submits the employer's job order to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population (MOLIP) for approval. The ISA publishes the list of licensed agencies.Contract and COE
The agency recruits for the approved job, you sign the SSW contract, and the employer gets your Certificate of Eligibility.OWIC
You apply to MOLIP for an Overseas Worker Identification Card (OWIC), which Myanmar requires for work abroad.Visa
You apply for the visa at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon with the COE.
Myanmar nationals already in Japan can be hired directly, without a Myanmar agency, but must apply for a passport (renewal) at the Myanmar Embassy in Japan. For the skills test in your field, see the SSW visa guide.
