The real test

What JFT Basic grammar questions look like

Grammar sits in Section 2, Conversation and Expression (会話と表現), next to expression questions about what to say in everyday situations. The whole test has about 50 questions on one 60-minute clock.

  1. One blank, four choices

A short sentence or two-line dialogue has a gap. Grammar items give four options; most other question types give three.

  2. Real-life situations

Sentences come from daily life and work: shops, trains, the workplace, talking to neighbours. Context often rules out a choice that looks grammatical on its own.

  3. No furigana

Kanji in the sentence has no reading above it, so learn the common A2 kanji with the grammar. Our quiz follows the same rule.

  4. Particles and forms

Expect particles, verb forms such as the te-form, requests and prohibitions, adjective endings, counters and set polite phrases.

See more question types in our JFT-Basic sample questions guide, or read about every section in the test format guide.

Study tips

How to get grammar right on test day

  1. Read the whole sentence first

The words after the blank decide the answer: 行きます takes へ or に, 待ちます takes で for the place. Read to the end before you choose.

  2. Learn particles with their verbs

Memorise pairs like 電車を降ります, 先生に会います and 犬が好きです. These pairs are where most points are lost.

  3. Say the forms out loud

The te-form changes by verb ending (書く → 書いて, 待つ → 待って, 住む → 住んで). Saying them builds speed you need for a test with about 50 questions in 60 minutes.

  4. Practise in mixed rounds

Topic rounds build a skill; mixed rounds test it the way the exam does. Finish with a full section drill.
