JFT Basic score calculator

This JFT Basic score calculator turns your score into its level (A1, A2.1 or A2.2), checks it against the SSW line of 200 and shows how far you are from the next band. No score yet? Estimate one from a practice result.

The JFT-Basic scale from 10 to 250 with its four level bands and the SSW line at 200.
  • No level (*)10–144
  • A1145–174
  • A2.1175–199
  • A2.2 (A2)200–250

Type the total from your result (or drag the slider) to see your level.

Levels and the SSW line come from the Japan Foundation. The practice → score mode is our own estimate: real scores are scaled, and no official conversion table exists. We are independent of the Japan Foundation and Prometric.

How scoring works

How JFT Basic scoring works

The JFT-Basic does not count correct answers. It reports a scaled score and a level, and the level is what employers and immigration look at.

  1. A scaled score from 10 to 250

Scores are equated across test forms, so a harder form does not lower your score. That is why no official raw-to-score table exists.

  2. No pass mark, a level

The Japan Foundation assesses a level rather than pass or fail. 200 and above is A2.2 (A2), the level used for SSW (i).

  3. Only the total counts

There is no minimum per section. Your official result also shows the percentage you got right in each section, which tells you where to study.

  4. Result on screen, then online

You see your score and level on screen at the end of the test. The official notification follows on Prometric's My Page within 5 business days.

  5. New bands since August 2026

Tests from August 2026 also report A1 (145–174) and A2.1 (175–199). Before that only A2 was judged, and an older 200+ result still proves A2.2.

  6. No expiry date

A JFT-Basic result does not expire. The data stays on the registration site for 5 years, so print it while it's there.

Practice to score

How many correct answers do you need?

There is no official answer, because the test is equated. Our estimate puts 200 at roughly three correct answers in four on a paper of real-test difficulty. We ask learners to reach 80% in practice before booking, which leaves room for a bad day and a harder form.
