JFT listening practice test, free with answers
This free JFT listening practice works like the real JFT-Basic listening section: each clip plays up to 2 times, then you choose from 3 answers. After you answer you get the transcript, an English translation, a slow replay and the reason for the answer. Start with the number trainer, because numbers are where most points are lost.
Hear a price, time, date, phone number, counter, age or floor in a short sentence and pick what you heard. The trainer leans on the readings that trip people up: よっか and ようか, しちじ and いちじ, 300 and 3,000.

The real section
What the JFT-Basic listening section tests
Listening is the third of the four JFT-Basic sections. Everything runs on one 60-minute clock, so time spent replaying comes out of your reading time.
Up to 2 plays per clip
You press play yourself and can listen once or twice. Use the first play for the big picture and the second to check one detail.
No going back
In the listening section you cannot return to an earlier question. Answer before you press Next.

The set-up line and the question are shown in English (with a Your Language button). In the official samples the answer options are pictures.
Three kinds of clips
Conversations, exchanges at shops and public places, and announcements or instructions. Numbers, times and places decide many answers.
Number traps
Japanese number readings that cost points
Japanese numbers change their sound when they join a counter. These are the readings learners most often mishear in JFT listening. The trainer above drills all of them.

How to practise
A 15-minute daily listening routine
5 minutes of numbers
Do one round of each kind in the number trainer. Stop on the readings you miss and say them out loud.
5 short clips
Read the set-up and question first, play once, choose, and use the second play only to check. Then read the transcript.
Replay slowly, then shadow
After you answer, play the clip slowly and repeat each line right after it. That fixes the sounds you missed.
