The one habit bosses expect

ほうれんそう: report, contact, consult

Japanese managers often say ほうれんそう (hō-ren-sō), a play on the word for spinach. It is the habit of keeping your boss informed. New workers who do it well are trusted fast.

  1. 報告 ほうこく: report

Tell your boss when a job is done, and tell them straight away when something goes wrong, even if it was your mistake.

  2. 連絡 れんらく: contact

Pass on facts early: you will be late, a machine stopped, a resident did not eat. Call before your shift, not after.

  3. 相談 そうだん: consult

If you are unsure, ask before you act. Guessing in a care home, factory or building site can be dangerous.

You will find ready phrases for all three under Every workplace → Reporting.

How to use it

Learn the phrases you'll actually say

  1. Start with Every workplace

Greetings, asking for help, safety and time off work in every job. Learn these before your field's list.

  2. Star 10 for your job

Pick the ten phrases you'll need in your first week, then practise only your favourites until you get them right every time.

  3. Say them out loud

Play each phrase, then say it yourself. Use Slowly to catch every sound. Print your list for the break room.

Phrases and the visa

Workplace Japanese and the SSW language requirement

For SSW (i), the usual Japanese requirement is a JFT-Basic score of 200 or more (or JLPT N4). Nursing care adds its own care Japanese test. Phrases like these appear in the JFT-Basic too: instructions, notices and short conversations at work.
