Interview manners
Japanese interview tips: door, bow and greetings
In a Japanese interview, how you enter and sit counts almost as much as what you say. These steps work for face-to-face and online interviews.
Knock and wait
Knock three times. When you hear 「どうぞ」, open the door, step in, and say 「失礼します」 (excuse me) before closing it quietly behind you, facing the door.
Bow, then speak
Stand straight beside the chair. Say 「よろしくお願いいたします」, then bow from the waist, about 30 degrees, and pause for a second at the bottom. Don't talk while you bow.
Wait to sit
Sit only when you hear 「どうぞおかけください」 (please sit). Say 「失礼します」 and sit with your back straight, hands on your knees.
Say it, don't read it
Look at the interviewer, not your notes. A short answer said with confidence beats a long one read from paper.
If you don't understand
Ask politely: 「すみません、もう一度お願いします」 (sorry, once more please). It's much better than guessing.
Leaving the room
Stand, say 「ありがとうございました」, and bow. At the door, turn, say 「失礼します」, bow lightly and close the door gently.
Online interview? Test your camera and sound the day before, sit in front of a plain wall, and bow to the camera at the start and the end.
How it works
How to introduce yourself in Japanese
A Japanese self-introduction follows a fixed order. Interviewers expect it, so keeping to it already sounds polite.
- はじめまして (nice to meet you)
- Your name + と申します (my name is)
- Where you come from, and your age
- How long you have studied Japanese
- Your work experience and the job you want
- Why Japan, and your hobbies
- どうぞよろしくお願いいたします (closing greeting)
Why katakana for your name? Japanese uses katakana for foreign names and words, by sound. There is often more than one correct spelling, so the converter gives a first guess you can edit. Ask your teacher or agency which spelling is on your documents and use the same one.
