Japanese numbers and counters chart (free PDF)
Japanese numbers are regular once you know 1 to 10 and the units 百 (100), 千 (1,000) and 万 (10,000). The hard part is counters: people are counted with 人, long things with 本 and flat things with 枚, and the sound often changes (いっぽん, さんぼん, ろっぽん). This chart shows 1 to 10 for 11 common counters with every sound change in red, plus big numbers and prices. Numbers come up all through the JFT-Basic: prices, floors, amounts and phone numbers.

A price ending in 4 is read よ: 104円 = ひゃくよえん.

Tips
- Ask how many with なん + counter: なんにん, なんぼん, なんまい. For things in general: いくつ.
- Digits go in groups of four: 10,000 is いちまん, 100,000 is じゅうまん.
- Phone numbers are read digit by digit, 0 is ゼロ and the hyphen is の.

Learn the red cells
The black cells follow the rule; only the red ones need memorising. Most are 1, 3, 6, 8 and 10.
Count real things
Count what's on your table out loud with the right counter: ペンが 三本, かみが 二枚.
Train your ear
In listening, numbers go by fast. The listening practice has a number trainer for prices, floors and counters.
Read prices as one word
Say prices in one go: さんぜんはっぴゃくえん. A price ending in 4 is read よ: ひゃくよえん.
